Setting new standards of RoadEfficiency

The all-new Mercedes-Benz Actros, launched locally at the end of May, comes with the promise of setting new standards as “the most efficient truck”. To really understand its promise of RoadEfficiency, one needs to look at the sum of the details…

The new StreamSpace cab has been tested extensively in the wind tunnel, resulting in the most aerodynamic shape yet.

Advanced new Euro-3 (OM460) and Euro-5 (OM471) engines are combined with an optimised drivetrain, the PowerShift 3 transmission, which results in 50-percent faster shift times and fuel savings of up to seven percent globally.

The vehicle was tested with full loads under extreme conditions in South Africa and returned a fuel saving of six percent.

Flexible service intervals ensure that maximum value is derived from all service components, leading to less wastage and lower maintenance costs. The result is up to six-percent lower maintenance rates and service intervals of up to 50 000 km for the Euro-3 engines, and up to 80 000 km for the Euro-5 version.

The new Actros offers greater levels of safety; five new safety assistant systems to be exact. For example, Active Brake Assist 4 – the world’s first emergency brake assistance system in the transport sector, which can detect moving pedestrians – is part of the comprehensive list of standard safety equipment on all Fuel Specification (Hazardous Goods) vehicles.

Ensuring high levels of reliability, the new Actros has covered more than 16-million test kilometres in South Africa during development at the East London plant’s engine durability test department, in addition to more than 60-million test kilometres covered globally.

In terms of driving uptime, Fleetboard Vehicle analysis provides intelligent vehicle data for maximised vehicle availability and use. FleetBoard is combined with FleetBoard Eco Support – this provides effective driver support in real time by displaying tips on a consumption-reducing driving style in the instrument cluster during the journey. Fleetboard and Fleetboard Eco Support are standard on all new Actros models.

Finally, the new Actros comes standard with a one-year/unlimited kilometre complete vehicle warranty, and a five-year/650 000 km standard warranty on the drivetrain.
