New models and new ambition from Isuzu

Yesterday (Thursday, February 28), Isuzu Motors South Africa (IMSAf) launched an enhanced range of its extra-heavy FX-, GX- and FY-Series models, as well as updates to its N- and F-Series models – and gave us a preview of some exciting developments to come from the brand…

The big news was the launch of the Isuzu FY-Series 8×4 models into the South African market. These included a 33-t gross vehicle mass (GVM) tipper and concrete mixer, and a 35-t GVM, 23-m3 compactor – the biggest available locally. Six new models have been launched into this vehicle range in total.

The FYH 35-360 8×4 compactor has been created to move larger volumes of waste from smaller landfills further out of town. Its legal 35-t GVM is made possible thanks to a 15-t rating on the front twin-steer axles and 10,2-t on each of the two rear drive axles.

It’s equipped with an Allison torque-converter automatic transmission with gearbox-driven power-take-off, which means the compactor hydraulics can be operated while the vehicle is on the move.

As with the rest of the FX and FY range, it features a standard exhaust brake and, as it’s equipped with the Allison transmission, the option of a hydraulic intarder.

Power comes from the 9,8-litre, six-cylinder, turbo-intercooled, common-rail diesel engine that is common to all vehicles in the range. This engine develops 265 kW (362 hp) and 1 422 Nm torque at 1 400 r/min.

All Isuzu drive axles employ a low-friction, single-reduction hypoid design to return optimum fuel consumption.

IMSAf has also taken the opportunity to enhance its N- and F-Series of medium and heavy commercial vehicles. Key enhancements include:

  • A revised driver’s seat on the N-Series;
  • Central locking and electric windows on N- and F-Series;
  • A Bluetooth-equipped radio unit on AMT models; and
  • Optional air-conditioning.

“Isuzu has occupied the number one position in the medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicle segments of the South African market for six years in a row,” comments Craig Uren, executive officer, Sales, Services and Marketing.

“In 2018, Isuzu became the highest volume selling truck brand in South Africa,” he adds.

And the company is not letting its success stop with trucks… Excitingly, it also revealed a prototype 35-seater, rear-engine coach that it will release to the market soon – but you will have to wait for Issue 4 of FOCUS for all of those details! Don’t miss it!
