Golfing for greatness

Golfing for greatnessIt was a day on the golf course courtesy of Charmont Media, but all for a good cause. The transport and automotive industry turned up showing its true colours in support of this very worthy cause.

Randpark Golf Club was the venue, industry bigwigs were the PGA hopefuls, and educating the leaders of tomorrow about the many exciting careers in the motoring industry was the cause, as Charmont Media hosted their annual Edutrans golf day at the beginning of March.

Golfing for greatnessEdutrans is an annual guide – the first is due to be launched in September this year – aimed at high school learners in an attempt to interest them in the ‘wheels game’, as soon as they begin considering their projected career paths. With an inherent youth focus, the project aims to cover important topics surrounding the automotive and transport industry.

“The problem is that they’re [school-leaving teenagers] simply unaware of the many exciting opportunities available to them; they believe that career prospects in the transport and automotive industries are limited to diesel mechanics or drivers,” says FOCUS editor, Charleen Clarke.

There were 32 four-ball teams on the day, representing some of the major industry players. TATA was the winning team, who won the overall prize sponsored by Hino. However, every team won a prize for the position they finished in. In the longest drive competition, the lady’s winner was Cathy Bell from Standard Bank, while the men’s winner was Justin Hobday from the NOSA team. Each won a golf bag sponsored by TATA.

Golfing for greatnessThere was also a “nearest to the pin” competition at various holes – well done to Jeandre Koen (2nd hole), Daniel de Klerk (6th hole), Nico Nel (15th hole), and Mike Fannucchi (17th hole). Thank you to NOSA for sponsoring the champagne and Jack Daniels gift hampers, and also the Proshop gift vouchers.

TATA sponsored a wedge and Imperial Toyota a putter, which were won by Johan Uys form Bidvest and Leon Nel from Cummins respectively. Johan Hagg from AFRIT was the lucky winner of the raffle – a holiday sponsored by the Dream Vacation Club.

But, at the end of the day, whether they were on the fairway or in the bunker, over or under par, fun was had by all and each and every one gave the Edutrans project major kudos. The day was a resounding success.

Everyone agrees that Edutrans is a proactive step to addressing the increasing skills shortage – one of the greatest challenges faced by the industry. “This is the ideal way to reach future skilled employees and customers. Without the right people, this industry cannot survive,” Clarke continues.
